Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your door handle made of uPVC requires replacement, it is essential to choose the correct replacement for your home. Locksmiths can provide and fit high-security uPVC handles with added security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Make sure to check these measurements to make sure your new uPVC handles will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rigid bar pivoted around a point (known as a the fulcrum). When you apply force to the end, the fulcrum will move in the direction of the force is applied. This rotates the fulcrum, increasing the force applied which allows you to lift or move something that would require more force if you were to apply directly to the load.
The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point at which you apply force determines the maximum amount of movement. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The greater the length of the lever more, the greater the mechanical benefit. You can calculate mechanical advantage by dividing distance from fulcrum point to the place where you are applying force by the distance between fulcrum point and the end of the lever.
Levers can also have different effects depending on how the forces are applied. A class 2 lever, for example, has a tendency of rotating in the opposite direction once the force applied to it. If you push on the handle of a door and force it to open, the forces will cause the same rotational effects as this.
However, levers don't create energy. Levers increase the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a lengthy distance into larger amounts of force applied over shorter distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and move massive quantities of cargo. The principle of the lever is also used in everyday tools like crowbars. Hammer claws, fishing rods and your own legs, as you are standing on your car's hand brake.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. They come in a variety of designs and finishes and are suitable for a variety of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the outside and the interior doors, with spindles and screws included. They are also available in both handed and unhandled versions for different types of users.
They can be used to replace the existing upvc door. They are typically operated by lifting up the levers to throw out all of the multipoint locks, and turning the key to close / unlock. They provide a bit more security than traditional lever door handles, as the locking can only be done from the inside using the key.
They're not as secure as a cylinder lock, but they are an affordable way to increase the security of your home. The only downside is that they don't offer the same level of protection as a cylinder lock and they don't restrict access to the home when the door is left open.
We stock a large number of lever pad upvc handles made by top manufacturers in the industry. They will therefore be made with high quality components. In general, they come with a manufacturer's guarantee.
They usually are designed to work with the 92mm lock, or a replacement version called a Paddock Lock. They will have a 92mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the outside and be equipped with two spindle followers. Some are fitted with the back plate, while others can be removed to allow for different fixing centres.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches, the simplest of all door handles, are used. Pressing down on the lever triggers a simple latch mechanism inside to keep the door closed, which can be locked with the use of a key. The levers for privacy are based on this same principle, but with the addition of a Snib (like knobs for doors).
A snib button is very useful, especially in homes where it's essential to maintain privacy or security. You can use the snib button to block your guest from entering until they are ready. This type of handle can also be put in on doors inside, such as those in bedrooms where you wish to restrict outside access.

In some cases, snib buttons can cause problems, particularly when you have older locks and doors that are distorted. If the snib button was accidentally pressed by a person who isn't familiar with it, the door may slam and lock you out. In most cases, you can gain entry by knocking on the door's frame or the letterbox, but this isn't the best option.
If your uPVC has a snib, we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. These smart locks can be retrofitted onto double turn pull handle kits. They are available with coverplates to hide the holes in the existing ones to make it an effortless installation. The E-LOK app can be used to unlock doors using RFID cards or a mechanical key. Passcodes are also offered to ensure security and convenience. The system is tested to 200,000 cycles to ensure long-term durability. The handles themselves are made with a solid metal construction and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for resistance to corrosion.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This popular handle design is typically used for front doors. It offers the benefit of preventing the door from being opened without the key from outside if the lock has not been deadlocked. This is achieved by using a 'pad-shaped' external handle that locks into the gap between the handle and lock case.
This handle is designed to be used with uPVC multipoint locks that employ a split spindle mechanism. This type of operation requires the internal lever handle and the external pad handle to be fitted on the same lock case. It is a simple change from the current uPVC handles, but it could also require a change to the lock case or even a new set of handle furniture to allow this added functionality.
These levers/movable pad handles are suitable for uPVC doors. They feature a slide bearing that is maintenance-free as well as spring cassettes, and fixing lugs included. They have a euro profile cut out and are fitted to a variety of uPVC and timber doors.
The lever-movable pad is available in many styles to match a wide range of multipoint locks. They are specifically designed to be used with split spindle locks with the 92mm cylinder as their centre and require a specific set of split spindles supplied by the lock maker.
These Hoppe London 77G/3831N/113 lever moveable pad handles are manufactured from cast aluminum with an anodised finish that is corrosion resistant and has high scratch resistance. It is made up of two inline handles that can be moved and locked with a thumbturn cylinder or keys. Pad handles are an alternative to a lever/lever handle and consists of either a movable or fixed pad that can be used to control the lock. Repair My Windows And Doors have a spring-loaded lever pads with snibs that can be turned on to hold the latch back.
